Gravity's Rainbow (2005)

Gelatin silver print, fiber, 40 x 50, edition of 3

The Library of Rhizomatic Activity includes books in personal, public and institutional collections. The Library is established without moving a single book. Each book in the collection is marked by a dust-jacket, and returned to the owner. The dust-jacket is made of reflective material called Scotchlite by 3M. The Library of Rhizomatic Activity includes slim volumes in distant cities, small towns and neighbourhoods.

To participate in the project, choose a book. I will make a cover, return the book to you and photograph it with the Linhof with the ring flash. When photographed with a flash, the book appears to be consumed in a burst of bright white light, and dissappears from the image. The picture will be printed at LTI on fiberbased paper. I've known the owner since high school. They make the most beautiful photographs in the city.

Scotchbrite™3M reflective material in art interrupts the process of mechanical reproduction. The material responds to re-positioning and light. When the viewer occupies a mid-point between the work of art and a light source, the work “pops,” jumps in hue from an indistinct grey to a blinding white light. When photographed with a flash, a white hole appears in lieu of the object.
